Lemon verbena and hibiscus aren’t native to Southern California but both thrive in the climate and are hearty perennials in my yard. Combined in a flavorful tissane, they have powerful health benefits. Each spring when it’s time to wiggle into last year’s swimsuit, you may appreciate this tea’s purported ability to aid in weight loss.

Dynamic duo of fat fighting

In traditional Chinese medicine, hibiscus flower teas were used to reduce hypertension and inflammation. In South America, lemon verbena brews treated diabetes and asthma. When combined, recent studies indicate that lemon verbena and hibiscus, in addition to other health benefits, can help decrease body weight and liver weight.

Brewing lemon verbena and hibiscus tissane

Drink this mixture hot or cold with ice. In summer it’s refreshing and the color is bright.

Equipment

  • 1 small sauce pan

  • 1 strainer

Ingredients

  • ½ cup fresh hibiscus flowers or 2 tablespoons dried hibiscus flowers

  • 3-4 fresh lemon verbena leaves or 1 tablespoon dried lemon verbena

  • 2 ½ cups water

  • 1 tablespoon honey

Instructions

Rinse the hibiscus flowers

Boil the water in a sauce pan, then add the flowers and the lemon verbena

Turn down the heat and let simmer 10 minutes

Strain into a teacup and add honey to taste
